Have you ever been stunng? · May 5, 10:43 AM

In a group I monitor I came across a discussion of anger, its definition and synonyms. Someone posted a link to what was supposed to be a definition of annoyed. It looked to me more like a list of synonyms and that got me to thinking about the subjectivity of the different words and degrees of meaning for “anger” and its synonyms. Sort of like the many words for different kinds of snow that the eskimos are said to have.

Well, among the synonyms for annoyed were: irritated, miffed, nettled, peeved, riled, roiled, steamed and stunng. They were clickable links on the page so I clicked on the last word, stunng, which I had not seen before.

Okay, the definitions of the word stunng all seem to lead to a definition at WordNet but I can find no mention of its derivation. WordNet claims to be a lexical database for the English language from the Cognitive Science Laboratory at Princeton University so, of course, it must be correct!

A google search of the word stunng gives links to sites that cite the WordNet entry as well as a stunng Tibetan necklace , a wine with “stunng tones of vanilla and raspberries” and many references to “stunng” images and pictures as well as dictionary references that lead back to WordNet . It is interesting to me that these references to stunng are all postive and do not seem to reflect a feeling of anger! Actually, google asks: Did you mean: stunning and perhaps most of them did.

If anyone can find where the word stunng, a synonym for, um, angry, came from I’d love to know!
