Earth Day!
Well, the Saturday sound-bites on the local all-news radio station did it again. This morning, preoccupied with something else, I thought I heard someone claiming that sunscreen may cause skin cancer. Right after a public service announcement urging listeners to remember to apply their sunscreen!
Gee, is there a conspiracy to get us to distrust any statement? The sun’s rays are bad! No, sunscreen is bad!
A good topic to root for the truth.
I’m still not sure what the truth is, but a google search pulled up an article about a study that proposes that “Even if too much sun leads to skin cancer, which is rarely deadly, too little sun may be worse.”
So, in this case at least, they aren’t telling us the ingredients in the sunscreen are causing cancer. No, it’s the dedicated use of the sunscreen keeping the body from producing Vitamin D.
A little sunshine or getting more of the vitamin in one’s diet seems to help prevent certain cancers. However, it seems that it’s much more difficult to get enough of the right kind of Vitamin D from diet than from sunshine.
Still rooting for the truth…but glad I followed up on what I thought I heard.
