Zimbabwe Slaughter · May 22, 08:40 PM

A few weeks ago I heard that elephants, rhinos and other wildlife were being slaughtered in Zimbabwe, Africa. It’s a long political story that I won’t get into here.

My first thought was, is it true? The talk show host I heard discussing it asked if anyone had seen anything about it in our US news media. I assumed that an active animal rights organization like PETA would be covering this item. I couldn’t find anything about a Zimbabwe slaughter with a cursory glance at their website. (They seem to be mostly worried about animals being used for clothing, entertainment, testing and food. Check out their wildlife page)

Not wanting to plow through all the PETA pages I tried a google search of PETA and Zimbabwe. This brought up the name Basildon Peta a South African news correspondent, not the US organization. A new google search just today did find someone who was also wondering about PETA’s silence.

Frontline Fellowship has a good article about the animal slaughter and a picture page of the cruelty to human and animal alike. People who are anti-religion might be tempted to dismiss the article bacause it’s written by a missionary, but skip the biblical quotes and read it. The author seems pretty worried about the wildlife at the hands of the “war veterans and youth militia”.

The folks at at ZimConservation are worried, too. This article at the Zim Observer seems to lend credibility to the ZimConservation statement that

Wildlife experts dispute the Government’s figures and say that the proposed sale is a ploy to create the impression that the country’s game parks, which have been devastated by poaching and mismanagement over the past five years, are well run.

However, the Zambesi Society has stated that at least one wildlife park is

suffering from a serious overpopulation of elephant bulls, cows, calves, impala, and a sprinkling of kudu.

and that it is

political motivation lying behind overseas media exaggerations of the Zimbabwean wildlife scene.

The last statement is dated November of 2004 and I’ve been wondering where to find those “overseas media exaggerations”. Apparently PETA hasn’t seen them.

Still rooting for the truth…
